Mid Sussex Triathlon 2008 - Race Instructions

Format: Pool swim 400m, Cycle 25km, Run 5.9km

Registration

Registration takes place in the Leisure Centre foyer between 6:00 and 7:00am. Please note, the transition area will be closed off at 7.00am when the event starts. Registration will be split into two sections: non-BTA members sign in and are marked with their race number and receive a BTA day licence; BTA members must produce a valid BTA membership card, sign in and be marked with their race number (any competitor who entered as a BTA member but fails to produce a valid membership card must purchase a day membership licence for £3.00). Competitors then proceed to the transition area, with bike race number (enclosed) affixed to bike. Prepare your kit in the transition area and then make your way to the swimming pool ready for the start. Please be aware of competitors who have already started and keep clear of swim exit route. Toilets, changing rooms and lockers are adjacent to the pool – lockers take £1 coins.

Race Briefing

Will take place in the transition area at 6:45am.

Swim

Held in the competition 25m 8-lane pool. It will be a 'zig-zag' swim keeping to the left of the lanes, swim two lengths then change down a lane and so on till you run out of lanes (total 400m). The first swimmer will start at 7.00am. Competitors will be put in the water in number order (1 to 250, slowest to fastest) based on estimated swim times. At the end of the swim, exit through the double doors taking care as the surface may be slippery.

T1 (Transition 1) – see map below

Transition will take place in the tennis courts. Please familiarise yourself with the entry and exit points prior to the race. After the swim, run through the Swim IN transition area entry point to your cycle and change into your cycle kit. IMPORTANT NOTES: MAKE SURE YOU HAVE YOUR CYCLE HELMET SECURELY FASTENED BEFORE TOUCHING YOUR BIKE OTHERWISE YOU FACE DISQUALIFICATION FROM THE EVENT. When you are ready unrack your bike and wheel it to the transition exit Bike OUT. Mount your bike in the Bike mount/dismount box (marshalls will assist you). And then begin the cycle leg.

Cycle – see map below

The cycle course is a 1 lap 25km course on country roads. Turn right at the mini roundabout to exit the Leisure Centre. Continue straight across the first large roundabout, and proceed along the A2300. Turn right at the next roundabout towards Ansty. The road rises gently and is uneven in places. At the junction turn left, and left again at the mini roundabout onto the A272. A fast descent towards the roundabout at the A23. Take care on approach to the A23 roundabout. Continue across the roundabout on the A272 towards Cowfold. Follow this flat, windy road, past the Twineham junction. Turn left onto a small lane signposted to Wineham. Continue to the end of this road, and then turn left onto the B2116 towards Albourne. Continue to Albourne, and then turn left towards Sayers Common. Proceed through Sayers Common and straight through the roundabouts, and onto the slip road for the A23. This part of the course takes you onto the A23, a busy dual carriageway, for about 500 yards – please take care as you join the road. Keep to the left but avoid debris and cats eyes at the side of the road. Take the first exit ramp up to the roundabout, and turn right onto the A2300, heading back towards the Leisure Centre.

Important notes: Competitors are reminded that the Highway Code must be observed at all times. Any competitors caught cycling dangerously or with disregard for the Highway Code will be penalized. Drafting is prohibited and will be policed by a BTA draft buster on the course. Any competitors caught drafting will be penalized. If you are overtaken, you must drop back 10 metres. Marshalls will be positioned at all turns on the course to guide and assist you. There will be signs to warn traffic but please take care as you proceed around the course.

T2 (Transition 2)

Cycle into the Leisure Centre car park, and dismount in the bike mount/dismount box (the marshalls will help you here). Wheel your bike through the Bike IN transition entry point and rack it at your kit point before removing your helmet. IMPORTANT NOTES: MAKE SURE YOU RACK YOUR BIKE BEFORE REMOVING YOUR CYCLE HELMET OTHERWISE YOU FACE DISQUALIFICATION FROM THE EVENT. Change into your running gear and head out of the Run OUT transition exit displaying at least one number on your front to begin the run.

Run – see map below

The run course takes you through the streets and footpaths of the town finishing in front of the Leisure Centre. Run out the back of the Leisure Centre turn right and run down to the roundabout, then begin 2 laps of the run course. After the first lap you will receive a band from the marshall (make sure you collect a wrist band), which indicates that you have completed 1 lap. At the end of your second lap turn left and return to the Leisure Centre and the finish.

Prizes & Presentation

Medals will be awarded to all finishers. Prizes will be awarded for the following categories:
15-19 (junior ABC) 1st Male & 1st Female
20-29 (senior DE) 1st & 2nd Male & 1st & 2nd Female
30-39 (senior FG) 1st & 2nd Male & 1st & 2nd Female
40-49 (veteran HI)1st & 2nd Male & 1st & 2nd Female
50+ (veteran J+) 1st & 2nd Male & 1st & 2nd Female
Prizes will be presented as soon as possible after the race has finished.

Results

Results will be available on the website (www.midsussextriclub.com) as soon as possible after the event.

Safety notes

First aiders and a paramedic ambulance will be on hand throughout the event. If you need assistance, please alert a marshall.

Swimmers will be put into the water at 10 second intervals in number order 1 - 300.
7:00am - 7:15am 1 to 90
7:15am - 7:30am 91 - 180
7:30am - 7:45am 181 - 300
